ABOUT SPEELKRING PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL

"Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world."
Nelson Mandela
Speelkring envisions being an inclusive centre where children can be included in a nurturing environment which promotes learning as a life-long process and enables each child to be a confident self-directed, positive member of an ever-changing global society.
Here at Speelkring, we encourage our children to take part in the community by becoming involved and contributing to the manner in which children gain the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the best head start and early development.
The school is designed to educate children from many different communities, ranging in age from one to six years old. The school has a daycare program and also offers an after-care program for parents who work late and need to leave their children under supervision.
SCHOOL HOURS
Our school is open from 7:00 until 12:30.
The after-care program is open until 17:30.
Classes start at 9:00.
We are open throughout the school holidays as a daycare center to accommodate our working parents.
OUR HISTORY
Members of the local community established Speelkring in 1959. Children were playing in the streets without any formal education or guidance. The need to nuture these young minds and bodies was identified by the community in Idas Valley. To date, Speelkring still functions as a community with individuals working together to bring about change. Speelkring, is totally dependent on funding from the parents of it learners as well as funds raised within the community.
In the early years of Speelkring's existence, the children were hosted in various venues. These venues varied from houses to local church buildings. However, the community felt that the need for an adequately equipped school was imperative. With the help of the parents, the community, and the government a school building with four classrooms able to accommodate 120-140 learners was constructed in 1980.
OUR PRINCIPAL
Mrs. Lizette Gideons , the glue of the school, has been part of Speelkring for over 30 years. This hardworker ensures that the school always functions in tip-top shape. She ensures that all the teachers receive their lesson plans and she attends various workshops and meetings. As a principal, she has built professional relationships with Boland College and Stellenbosch University in allowing students to do their Education and Community Development practicals at the school.
